Research Notes

On the way between Spokane and Seattle I saw a wind farm, which I did not take a picture of--motoring on, I often did not stop. Coming up to Seattle I saw the emerging skyline, which was actually ugly on the mountains. A floating bridge is crossed upon which bicyclers can travel from one side of King County to the other. I found that out from Diedre who I spoke with at the County Council Members Office, King County. We discussed County government, temp agency, and humanitarian focus of Seattle. At the City Office I spoke with the IT Director regarding the differences in private and public sector. I then went to look at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, look at only, since it was indeed a private compound, soon to be in a more public place with great architecture in the middle of the city. After driving by I noticed the severely charming houseboat area and luckily became engaged in conversation with a houseboat resident before one of the houseboats caught on fire. See picture below.

Dinner With S&M

We had dinner at Duke's, which is featured in the Frasier sit-com. The restaurant overlooks the beach where a number of teenagers were having a nice time.

Houseboat Fire on Lake Union, Seattle

I had been talking with this fun and talkative houseboat resident when we noticed the smell of smoke in which we were soon enveloped. Quickly many fire engines arrived and we walked down to the public dock to look at the fire rescue efforts. The Seattle Fire Department did an excellent job in maintaining and squelching the fire to the one unit. There are a number of newscasts, reports, and comments online. While watching the evening news that night, we spotted my green sweater/elbow in the newscast "concerned residents look on." From comments posted on the issue I learned of the philosopher Empedocles.

Leaving Spokane

I hadn't intended on leaving just yet but the I-95 was right there so on I went. Notice the train tracks and passing train above the restaurant.

Research Notes

On Thursday, June 21, I was able to meet with Marla who I had corresponded with last year on my E-Government paper regarding "smart communities", Spokane being recognized as one by the Digital Communities Foundation. Marla works for Spokane Downtown Partnership. I then went to the City offices that are house in an Art Deco architecture, which I forgot to take pictures of. I spoke with the COO, John, and had a longer conversation with Brenda, an assistant to the GIS department. She commented on a stormwater project using GIS to determine impacts of a nearby glacier that had shifted and noted the Cour D 'Elene Tribal Government uses GIS to manage their resources.

Spokane County Commissioners/Courthouse

This building is historic french architecture. In another building I met Jeanine in HR who talked about job application process, four seasons of Spokane, the few snows and related activities, and incorporation of Spokane Valley resulting in funding taken away from the County.

These little sculptures made me smile and laugh, every angle lent a different perspective. The MAC had a life sized replica of a Tyrannosaurus rex, an exhibit of historical shoes, and an interesting artist, Gaylen Hansen.

The number of bees around this bush made a soft humming, like a soft breeze in the summer.

Unusual Flower in the Manito Park

The flower gardens these flowers were in included herbs, different textured plants, flowering plants and bees, and a family of Quail. The father Quail with his big feather ushered his family back into the various plants and the three little babies were so cute to see their little heads bobbing above the grass line.

Rose Garden, Manito Park

This was a hedge/bush/tree full of rose blooms. I was smelling the different roses and these seemed to be sooo soft that I just smooshed my nose into one and then had a sense that a bee would probably be inside, and sure enough, the one to the left of the rose I smooshed into has a bee. Click on pictures to enlarge.
